England 4-1 Netherlands EURO 1996

Posted under european soccer cup

The 1996 UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 96) was hosted by England. It was the tenth European Football Championship, which is held every four years and endorsed by UEFA, and the first to use the “Euro” name. The tournament’s final stages took place between 8 June and 30 June 1996. The slogan of the tournament was “Football Comes Home”, as it was the first time the tournament had taken place in England, where the rules of the game were first standardised. English football and popular culture has since referenced the competition fondly even though the home team did not reach the final.

Cannavaro: Europe’s Best Player

Posted under european soccer cup

The Italian captain Fabio Cannavaro received the Golden Ball Award. No defender had won this award in the last 10 years and the Italian is the third defender in thirty years to achieve this.

The Golden Ball Award is given to Europe’s best soccer player since 1956. It was created by the French football magazine “France Football”. This prize is also known as the European Footballer of the Year Award. It is given every year to the player that’s considered to have performed the best way during the previous year.
The requirement to win this prize is that the player must have been playing for a club based within UEFA’s jurisdiction. The player also must be of European nationality to be eligible. A group of European football journalists is responsible for voting for the best player.

Only three players have won this award three times: Johan Cruijff and Marco van Basten from the Netherlands, and Michel Platini from France.
This year, the winner was Cannavaro who used to play for Juventus (Italy) during last season and helped them win the World Cup but now he is playing with Real Madrid.
Gianluigi Buffon who is the Italian goalkeeper, ended in second place with 124 points, and Thierry Henry was third with 121. Ronaldinho that won the award in 2005 was fourth with 73 points, and Zinédine Zidane was fifth with 71. There were fifty players nominated.

The Ultras movement, or simply Ultras, is the name given to organized supporters’ groups for sports teams, mostly European and South American supporters of football teams. This fan sub-group appeared in Italy during the late 1960s when football teams reduced ticket prices on certain areas of the stadiums. Not to be confused with the British football firm and Casual cultures, although some of their supporting style is imitated. Although violent acts might occur, hooligan acts are more the exception than the norm. These are the most famous greek ultras also known as hooligans or hools these are most fantic passionate and distinguished fanatics in the world the are greek patriotic and nationalist
